Snowflakes

Snowflakes

We took the camera out in the early morning hours when it was snowing here in Austin, and took some macro photos of snowflakes, something I’d always wanted to do but, well, you can’t take pictures of snowflakes without snow and we very rarely get snow.

We got out our macro lens (5X Yasuhara Nanoha super macro lens, which has a built in USB powered light), got out our small GorillaPod tripod, then stood in the 10 degree F weather and caught some snowflakes on a black knit scarf, and tried to hold the camera lens just right to get the small snowflakes in focus. Which means the lens was basically right up against the snowflake/scarf.

Tony was more successful at this than I was so I ended up walking around the condos, enjoying the feel of walking through four inches of powdery snow and taking photos of the undisturbed snow before others woke up and came outside.

Here are a few of our favorite snowflake shots. Each one really is different! So amazing.
